THIS MONTH'S FEATURED BUSINESSES:

Developing leaders

One of the UK clearing banks has recently competed its fourth in a series of year-long leadership development programmes for its senior executives. The results have been so successful that the programme has been repeated and extended to lower grades year on year.

A year-long programme of Leadership Development has helped one of the sales divisions within a UK clearing bank to increase its sales by 100% over three years. The programme was created by Ian Scotland and includes an initial psychometric assessment of each leader - with an hour-long personal feedback session.

The theme which ran through the whole programme was one of Challenge. The group of eight senior leaders enjoyed six-weekly 1:1's with a personal coach where they discussed work and personal development issues in complete confidence. Each senior leader agreed in his or her 1:1 the things they needed to do to be successful over the next six weeks, knowing that they would be challenged vigourously at their next meeting.

Each quarter the senior group met off-site to discuss a specific leadership theme, their current work issues, the future strategy for the business and then created a detailed Action Plan for the next quarter. These meetings were facilitated by Ian Scotland. The whole programme - which began at Board level - has been so successful that it has been extended to three lower grades.

Several of the leaders within the initial group have seen their sales teams achieve their annual targets by mid-year, and gone back to their Director to ask for an increase in their target! The programme continues to be the most successful Leadership Development programme that the Bank has ever run.
